Scope of Practice Issues Coming For 2012 AZ Legislative Session
The Psychologists have submitted a sunrise application and will be pursuing legislation that would increase their scope of practice. The requested increase in the scope of practice would permit certain qualified psychologists to prescribe medications as an additional service within the practice of psychology as defined in A.R.S. §32-2061(A) 8 (as may be amended). Licensed psychologists would be granted this prescriptive authority only if they met additional certification requirements, including the demonstration of completion of a specific course of post-doctoral training in psychopharmacology, completion of supervised practice requirements in prescribing psychoactive medications, and passage of the national Psychopharmacology Examination for Psychologists.
The Chiropractors have also submitted a sunrise proposal which indicates that they will be seeking legislation that would require a change in scope to allow for the use of nutraceutical injectables and non-narcotic pharmaceuticals.
