Walter Brazie, MD, Fellowship Award:

The Brazie Award was established in 1975 to honor Walter Brazie, MD, 8th President of the AzAFP, who served two consecutive terms, in 1957 and 1958.  This award was created by the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians and the friends and family of Dr. Walter Brazie from Kingman, Arizona.  This award is presented annually to the individual chosen as the outstanding second-year resident in Arizona.  The winner receives a certificate and $500 funded by the AzAFP Foundation.  Other nominees receive $50 and a certificate.  The awards are presented at the Academy’s Awards Luncheon held in conjunction which the Annual Clinical Education Conference.

Award Eligibility:

a. Second-year resident in Arizona family practice residency program
b. A resident member of the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians
c. Recommended by the program director and at least two other AzAFP members who are part of the residency program faculty

November:  Nomination Forms due to AzAFP office and are submitted by Arizona Family Medicine Residency Program Directors.

December:  Interview Luncheon (All nominees are interviewed by the AzAFP Awards Committee and a winner is selected at the end of the interview day.

James L. Grobe, MD, Fellowship Award:

The James L. Grobe Award was established in 1973 to honor James L. Grobe, MD. Dr Grobe served as the 14th president of the AzAFP in 1963 and he went on to serve as president of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) from 1972–1973. Dr. Grobe passed away August 16, 1989. He was born in Huntington, West Virginia, and was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. A dedicated family physician, he also served as the president of the Arizona Medical Association, as president of the Arizona Blue Shield for four years, as Arizona Mental Health president from 1964–1966, and as board member of the National Association for Mental Health. In recognition of his outstanding accomplishments, AzAFP established the annual James L. Grobe, MD, scholarship award in 1975 for the outstanding third-year family practice resident in the state. Nelson Dewey Brayton Award:

Each year the AzAFP recognizes the outstanding senior family practice medical student, selected by the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine, Deptartment of Family and Community Medicine, with the Nelson Dewey Brayton Award. This award was established in honor of Dr Nelson Dewey Brayton, a family physician from Gila County who practiced in Globe, Arizona.  It was through the efforts and financial contributions of Mrs Dixie LaDow, Dr Brayton’s daughter, that this memorial scholarship was created.  Every year, the AzAFP President or equivalent officer presents the $500 award and certificate at the University’s Senior Breakfast Award Ceremony in or around the month of May.

The Pisacano Leadership Foundation, Inc.–The Piscacano Scholars Program:

Provides funding for outstanding third- or fourth-year medical students for a four- or five-year period. Students must make a commitment to the specialty of family medicine. The funding program is designed to reimburse medical school debt incurred by the student at the conclusion of the student’s residency.

Students are evaluated each year to assure eligibility for continuation. There is no service commitment for students upon completion of the scholarship.

James G. Jones, MD, Student Health Policy Scholarship (Administered by the AAFP Foundation):

Will provide funds for a medical student to attend the Family Medicine Congressional Conference (FMCC), sponsored jointly by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Academic Family Medicine Advocacy Alliance.

Will support travel expenses, and cover miscellaneous expense of attending FMCC.

Constituent chapter foundations and constituent chapters nominate medical students who have a commitment to public health and an interest in politics will benefit from this meeting which is designed to educate participants on federal issues that affect family medicine and to provide training on effective lobbying.
